Fornit®

The high strength geogrid for base and subbase layer stabilization.

(Kopie 2)

Basic info

Fornit® is an innovative high strength biaxial geogrid comprised of polypropylene yarns coated for protection from installation damage. Fornit® geogrids reduce required aggregate thickness of paved and unpaved roads through tensile reinforcement of the base course. By distributing loads over a wider area, Fornit® increases the bearing capacity of underlying soils. Fornit® also confines aggregate base materials to prevent lateral displacement of the base course. The aperture size of Fornit® has been engineered to create separation of typical base course from finer subbase materials while maintaining interlock of the aggregate base.

Fornit® geogrids are manufactured in HUESKER's ISO 9001 registered facility and are resistant to freeze-thaw cycles. Produced at a width of 17 feet, Fornit®'s wide rolls reduce overlaps and geogrid waste and are easy to install.

Fornit® is a registered trademark of HUESKER Synthetic GmbH.

Properties

Reinforcement

Fornit® geogrid dramatically increases the bearing strength of aggregate bases and subgrades in paved and unpaved roads. Fornit® distributes the applied loads, over a larger area. This greatly reduces the required bearing capacity of the underlying soils. Experience has proven that Fornit® geogrid mobilizes the forces it carries into the surrounding material even at low strains and therefore offers a high degree of soil reinforcement.

Confinement

Fornit® confines the aggregate base layer. Lateral displacement of the aggregate is prevented by interlocking with the grid. Shear tests in the boundary zones confirm this function. The ribs of the grid support the aggregate and promote bridging. Applied forces (e.g. wheel loads) are spread over a considerably larger area, thus increasing the bearing capacity of the road.

Separation

Fornit® is manufactured in different standard aperture sizes and can be adjusted to provide the best solution in any situation. The optimum aperture size prevents particles breaking away from the composite aggregate base and migrating into the softer subgrade. In addition, if no voids can form in the aggregate base layer, then fine particles from the subgrade cannot penetrate it.

Durability

HUESKER has taken steps to ensure that Fornit® is ready for the harshest site conditions. Manufactured from high strength polypropylene yarn and given a polymer coating, the geogrid is protected against installation damage and UV radiation. This means Fornit® geogrid is hardwearing and durable. Laboratory and field tests confirm these properties.
