This composite material consists of a high strength, low strain polymeric geogrid with an extremely large aperture size providing the main reinforcement and a pliable non-woven geotextile fabric attached to form a composite product.
Typical application areas:
- Dykes on soft, water-saturated soils
- For use with extremely coarse grained fills
- When fast and reliable substrate consolidation is required
Consolidation Process using Gigagrid®
Once Gigagrid® has been placed over the exisiting substrate area to be consolidated, a 30-60 cm thick layer of coarse sand, crushed rock chips or gravel and, if necessary, rocks can be placed directly on to it. During the initial spreading and compaction of this material the non-woven fabric component will deform into the substrate. Pore water within the soft substrate will then start to flow upwards through the non-woven fabric which will act as a filtering medium. During further compression of the free draining granular fill material, the non-woven fabric continues to bulge downwards between the longitudinal and lateral grid members providing the coarse contact surface area and a high interlock factor is achieved. This dual benefit can considerably improve and accelerate the consolidation of substrate in areas to be used for traffic.
Further benefits can be realised if Gigagrid® is used for consolidation of soft substrates in conjunction with band drains (Prefabricated Vertical Drains PVDs). The rate at which embankment construction can be progressed can be increased through the use of Gigagrid® when a ‘surcharge, monitor and hold’ technique is used on site.
Gigagrid is extremely easy and fast to install, hence low installation costs will be incurred by the contractor.
