HUESKER pavement improvement –Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA
Project Description
Offering more than 60 accredited programs of study, Liberty University has become the largest private university in Virginia. The last four years have seen explosive growth in student population.This growth has led to an increase in vehicle trafficon the campus roads, including the addition of buses. The roads had deteriorated under this increase in traffic and needed to be reconstructed.
Geosynthetic Solution
The new road design consisted of 12 inches of baseand eight inches of asphalt pavement. By installing HUESKER’s Fornit® 20 base reinforcement geogrid,the base thickness was reduced to 8 inches. The high tensile strength at low strains of Fornit® 20 combined with the confinement provided through Fornit®’s outstanding aperture stability made Fornit® 20 the ideal fit for geogrid reinforcement. Additionally, HaTelit® C 40/17 asphalt reinforcement was installed between the binder and surface courses of asphalt pavement to help extend the pavement life. HaTelit® was chosen because of itsability to distribute loads over a greater area, thereby reducing stress on the pavement.
Construction consisted of removal of existing pavement and stone base. Once the desired depth was achieved, Fornit® 20 was installed followed by the introduction of the new stone base. Upon installation and compaction of the eight inch base, the binder course of asphalt was installed. HaTelit® C 40/17 asphalt reinforcement was then expertly installed by Landsaver Environmental, followed by paving of the surface asphalt layer.
Product Description - Fornit®
Manufactured with high strength polypropylene yarns and coated for protection against both installation damage and exposure to ultraviolet rays, Fornit® geogrids are made to last. Strong and durable, they reinforce, confine, and separate unbound aggregate base materials. Fornit geogridsare easy to install and are resistant to freeze-thaw conditions and soil chemicals. By distributing loads over a greater area, Fornit® geogrids dramatically improve the bearing capacity of subgrade soils. Fornit geogrids are manufactured in HUESKER’s ISO 9001 certified production facility.
Product Description - HaTelit®
HaTelit® is an innovative asphalt reinforcement product that combines a high modulus polyester grid with a light nonwoven fabric. This composite is coated with bitumen to enhance the bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® asphalt reinforcement increases the tensile strength of the asphalt layer and reduces tensile stress peaks by distributing stresses over a larger area.
HaTelit® is comprised of polyester because it hasbeen proven to be an ideal material for asphalt reinforcement based on the compatibility of its mechanical behavior with the modulus of elasticityof asphalt. Unlike fiberglass, polyester is not brittle and has high resistance to dynamic loading and mechanical damage, allowing it to be placed directly on a milled surface.
HaTelit® has a bituminous coating to ensure a strongbond with the asphalt layers. This is essential because a reinforcement is only able to take up and distribute stresses if it has achieved a strong bond with the asphalt layers. Independent test confirm that HaTelit® provides the strongest bond with asphalt.
More than 35 years of experience, laboratory testing and research has proven that HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by reducing reflective cracking and increasing the service life of an asphalt overlay by a factor of three to four.
