Background:

In the course of the new construction of Germany’s only deep water port of the future, 360 hectares of land were created by the hydraulic filling of 43 million cubic metres of sand. Irrespective of tidal flows, the proposed port will provide access to large container vessels with over 16.5 metres of draught and 430 metres in overall length. Currently, the 480 million Euros order value constitutes the largest German water engineering project for the Construction Consortium JadeWeserPort. It includes the construction of quays and dams, hydraulic filling of the area, as well as the dredging activities on access waterways and berths, with a total project budget of 950 million Euros. Upon completion in 2012, JadeWeserPort is expected to generate a turnover of 2.7 billion Euros per year.

Solution:

The projected port area, extending over an area the size of 500 soccer fields combined, consists of two dams and a quay construction of 1,750 m long. The HaTe® sand mat, type E 650-S-A 300, is integrated as a filtering / separating layer within the protective construction of the 1,800 m long North Dam and the 1,200 m long South Dam. The HaTe® sand mat is placed under the covering layer, consisting of water building blocks of Class LMB 10/60, respectively CP 90/250, with colloidal seal, the sand mat provides filter stability; separating the sealed protection layer from the dam core fill material (0-200 mm). This system of multiple layers protects the hydraulically filled sand area against erosion. Upon completion, the filled area will serve as a base for terminal, logistics, industry and business locations. The design of the HaTe® sand mat, consisting of multiple layers of mechanically fastened filter webs and a quartz sand layer; the sand mat’s resulting high weight per square metre assures a simple installation, even below the water level. In addition to the HaTe® E 650-S-A 300 sand mat, 80,000 tons of steel, 80,000 cubic metres of concrete and 1 million tons of rock will be used within the construction of the port in conjunction with another 100,000 m2 of HUESKER Synthetic GmbH geosynthetics.
