HaTelit® Asphalt Reinforcement
Perdido Bay Golf Club, Pensacola, Florida
Project Description
Located in Pensacola, Florida, the Perdido Bay Golf Club is a Golf Digest nominee for “Best Public Course” and the former home to the Pensacola Open. The asphalt roads in the area, however, were not in the same peak condition as the golf course.
The surface layer of the asphalt exhibited several types of distress including severe oxidation, raveling, and transverse, longitudinal, and alligator cracking in some areas. Escambia County officials decided to take action. When the decision was made to resurface the county-owned roads, county engineers also decided to address future cracking problems by installing an asphalt reinforcement, HaTelit® C 40/17 made by HUESKER was the specified solution because of its unparalleled performance in reflective crack mitigation.
HaTelit® Installation
Installation of HaTelit® C 40/17 became a seamless part of the overlay process. Surface preparation included milling and cleaning of the existing surface and the application of a tack coat. Once the tack was in place, HaTelit® was installed using a paving fabric deployment device. The availability of HaTelit® in widths up to 13’ meant fewer passes for the installing crew and less time until paving could begin. Because HaTelit® is made from high-tenacity polyester it can be placed directly onto a milled surface, saving the time and expense of a levelling course. Once HaTelit® was installed, the paving crew was then able to immediately begin paving directly on top of HaTelit®. The presence of HaTelit® did not present any problems for the paving process.
Because of its superb bond with the asphalt and the attached ultra-light nonwoven fabric, vehicles were able to traffic HaTelit® without it pulling up and wrapping around their tires.
Product Description
HaTelit® is an innovative asphalt reinforcement product that combines a high modulus polyester geogrid with an ultra-light polypropylene nonwoven fabric. This composite is coated with bitumen to enhance the bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® reinforcement geogrids increase the tensile strength of the asphalt layer and reduce tensile stress peaks by distributing stresses over a larger area.
HaTelit® is made from polyester because it has been proven to be an ideal material for asphalt reinforcement based on the compatibility of its mechanical behavior with the modulus of elasticity of asphalt. Additionally polyester is not brittle and has high resistance to dynamic loading and mechanical damage, allowing it to be placed directly on a milled surface without a leveling course. HaTelit®’s coating has a bituminous content of over 60% to ensure a strong bond with the asphalt layers. This is essential because a reinforcement is
only able to take up and distribute stresses if it has achieved a strong bond with the asphalt layers.
Independent tests confirm that HaTelit® provides the strongest bond with asphalt.
More than 35 years of experience, laboratory testing and research has proven that HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by increasing the service life by a factor of three to four times that of an unreinforced asphalt overlay.
