HaTelit® Asphalt Reinforcement –South Adams High School
Project Description
In the summer of 2009, the parking lot at SouthAdams High School in Berne, IN was to receive a fresh layer of asphalt pavement to repair the distressed existing pavement. In order to keep the cracks in the existing pavement from reappearing in the new overlay, HaTelit® asphalt reinforcement geogrid from HUESKER was installed as part of the overlay process. HaTelit® was chosen because of its extensive successful track record of performance with reflective crack mitigation. HaTelit®’s wide rolls of 13.1 feet meant fewer overlaps and less waste than narrower products would produce, which pleased the county school board.
HaTelit® Installation
Installation of HaTelit® C 40/17 was a seamless part of the overlay process. Surface preparation included cleaning the existing surface and the application of a tack coat. Once the tack coat was in place, HaTelit® was installed using a fabric deployment device attached to a bobcat. The availability of HaTelit® in widths up to 13’ meant fewer passes for the installation crew and less time until paving could begin. Once HaTelit® was installed, paving commenced directly on top of HaTelit®. A two-inch lift of HMA was installed across the site. The presence of HaTelit® did not present any problems for the paving process. Because of its superb bond with the asphalt and the attached ultra-light nonwoven fabric, vehicles were able to traffic HaTelit® without saturating the tires with tack coat, which couldresult in the grid being pulled up around the tires.
Product Description
HaTelit® is an innovative asphalt reinforcement product that combines a high modulus polyester geogrid with an ultra-light polypropylene nonwoven fabric. This composite is coated with bitumen to enhance the bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® reinforcement geogrids increase the tensile strength of the asphalt layer and reduce tensile stress peaks by distributing stresses over a larger area.
HaTelit® is made from polyester because it has been proven to be an ideal material for asphalt reinforcement based on the compatibility of its mechanical properties with the modulus of elasticity of asphalt. Additionally, polyester is not brittle like fiberglass and has high resistance to dynamic loading and mechanical damage, allowing it to be placed directly on a milled surface without a leveling course. Survivability during installation is akey benefit of polyester, which can with stand the forces associated with installation. These forces can fracture fiberglass, causing it to lose a significant portion of its tensile strength.
HaTelit®’s bituminous coating ensures a strong bondwith the asphalt layers. This is essential because areinforcement is only able to take up and distribute stresses if it has achieved a strong bond with the asphalt layers. Independent test confirm that HaTelit® provides the strongest bond with asphalt.
Over 35 years of experience, laboratory testing and field experience has proven that HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by reducing reflective crackingand increasing the service life of an asphalt overlay by a factor of three to four. HaTelit®’s ease of installation and proven performance provide a cost savings alternative to asphalt overlay designers and pavement maintenance budgets.
