HaTelit® Asphalt Reinforcement –Eastern North Carolina

Project Description
When the entrance to a large industrial site in eastern North Carolina was in need of resurfacing,the owners chose HaTelit®HaTelit® asphalt reinforcement to provide protection from reflective cracking in the asphalt overlay. The road was exhibiting significant cracking due to the large volume of heavy traffic that traveled into and out of the facility each day. Engineers knew that simply overlaying the roadwith a two inch asphalt layer would allow the cracks to reappear within a very short period of time. HUESKER proposed HaTelit® C 40/17 as the solution to the reflective cracking problem. HaTelit® is a highstrength polyester geogrid with a bituminous coating engineered to develop a strong bond with the asphalt so that it can protect the overlay from reflective cracking. These properties made HaTelit® the ideal choice for reinforcing the overlay.

HaTelit®Installation
Preparation for the installation of HaTelit® required no extra steps than any other paving project. The existing pavement was swept to ensure that it was free of debris and dry. A tack coat was then applied at a rate of 0.1 gal/yd2. Once the tack coat was in place, HaTelit® was installed using a fabric deployment device attached to a backhoe. The availability of HaTelit® in widths up to 13’ meant fewer passes for installation and less time until paving could begin. Once HaTelit® was installed, paving was then able to immediately begin directly on top of HaTelit®. The presence of HaTelit® did not present any problems for the paving process. Because of its superb bond with the asphalt and the attached ultra-light nonwoven fabric, vehicles were able to traffic HaTelit® without it pulling up and wrapping around their tires.“We have been impressed with the ease of installation of HaTelit®”, noted paving contractor S.T. Product Description
HaTelit® is an innovative asphalt reinforcement product that combines a high modulus polyester geogrid with an ultra-light polypropylene nonwoven fabric. This composite is coated with bitumen to enhance the bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® reinforcement geogrids increase the tensile strength of the asphalt layer and reduce tensile stress peaks by distributing stresses over a larger area.

HaTelit® is made from polyester because it has been proven to be an ideal material for asphalt reinforcement based on the compatibility of its mechanical behavior with the modulus of elasticityof asphalt. Additionally, polyester is not brittle like fiberglass and has high resistance to dynamic loading and mechanical damage, allowing it to be placed directly on a milled surface without a leveling course. Fiberglass is easily fractured under the stresses of installation, causing it to lose a significant portion of its tensile strength. This problem can be avoided with polyester.

HaTelit®’s bituminous coating ensures a strong bond with the asphalt layers. This is essential because a reinforcement is only able to take up and distribute stresses if it has achieved a strong bond with the asphalt layers. Independent test confirm that HaTelit® provides the strongest bond with asphalt.

Over 35 years of experience, laboratory testing and field experience has proven that HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by reducing reflective cracking and increasing the service life of an asphalt overlay by a factor of three to four.

HaTelit®’s ease of installation and proven performance provide a cost savings alternative to asphalt overlay designers and pavement maintenance budgets.
