HaTelit® Asphalt Reinforcement –City of Sudbury, Ontario
Project Description
When the city of Sudbury, Ontario decided toresurface one of its main roads, Paris Street, anasphalt reinforcement grid was specified to reducethe appearance of reflective cracks. City engineerswanted to prolong the life of the overlay by delayingthe cracks on Paris Street from reflecting throughthe new pavement. HaTelit® was chosen because ofits extensive track record of performance withreflective crack mitigation. HaTelit® has been in useas the leading asphalt reinforcement productaround the world for over 35 years.
HaTelit® Installation
The design of the Paris Street overlay requiredmilling and paving of two binder courses, each 50 mmthick and a surface course of 40 mm. HaTelit® wasinstalled between the two binder courses. Once thetack coat was in place, HaTelit® was installed only inareas where there were cracks in the existingpavement. HaTelit® can be placed in full coverageor in specific areas, according to the projectrequirements. As a cost saving measure, the city ofSudbury installed HaTelit® only in areas wherecracks existed. A minimum of a half meter of HaTelit® is required to extend past the edge of cracks for anchorage when HaTelit® is being placedonly over cracked areas. For projects with regular cracks or joints, such as an asphalt overlay over aconcrete road, HaTelit® is ideal for mitigating the reflection of the joints-and a savings in projectfunds can be realized as less material is required to protect the overlay.
To facilitate the new curb construction, a two foot width of asphalt was milled all the way down to thebase course aggregate along the curbs. After thefirst binder course was paved to bring this milledarea to grade with the existing pavement, a two meter width of HaTelit® was installed along thecurbs to mitigate the reflection of the joint between the binder course and existing pavement. Once HaTelit® was installed, paving immediately began directly on top of HaTelit®. The presence of HaTelit® did not present any problems for the paving process.
Product Description
HaTelit® is an innovative asphalt reinforcement productthat combines a high modulus polyester gridwith an ultra-light polypropylene nonwoven fabric. This composite is coated with bitumen to enhancethe bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® asphalt reinforcement increases the tensile strengthof the asphalt layer and reduces tensile stress peaksby distributing stresses over a larger area. HaTelit® is made from polyester because it has been proven to be an ideal material for asphalt reinforcement based on its compatibility with themodulus of elasticity of asphalt. Additionally, polyester is not brittle like fiberglass and has high resistance to dynamic loading and mechanical damage, allowing it to be placed directly on amilled surface without a leveling course.
HaTelit®’s bituminous coating ensures a strongbond with the asphalt layers. This is essential because a reinforcement is only able to take up and distribute stresses if it has achieved a strong bondwith the asphalt layers. Independent test confirmthat HaTelit® provides the strongest bond withasphalt.
More than 35 years of experience, laboratorytesting and field experience has proven that HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by reducing reflective cracking and increasing the service life ofan asphalt overlay by a factor of three to four.
