The U75 Rispond Road is a 2.8 km singletrack access road to a fish farm located in North West Sutherland, and is typical of many public roads on the West Coast of Scotland, being founded on varying peat bog over Lewisian Gneiss.
It has required frequent maintenance to preserve an acceptable road for service
traffic.
Following temporary repairs in 1986, the road progressively deteriorated through the effects of HGV axle passage, with deep ruts and crazing, necessitating further repairs.
In an attempt to extend the life of the repair, Highland Regional Council decided in 1991 to install a geogrid reinforcement within the new surfacing layers, to test manufacturer´s claims of increased pavement service life. 

HaTelit® 30/13 was one of the materials selected for the trial, and since then has been extensively specified in the Highland Area, due, not only, to its cost competitiveness, but also to its ease of installation in such remote areas with, frequently, inclement weather conditions.
Following the 1991 resurfacing operation the road has been incorporated into the regular inspection programme undertaken by the Local Authority Roads Supervisor, in an attempt to identify any early signs of deterioration of the surface.
In 1998 the site was revisited by Huesker`s engineer. This revealed that, with the exception of the road´s inclusion in the surface dressing programme, no further maintenance had been undertaken on the sections resurfaced, incorporating HaTelit®.

HaTelit® 30/13 is still available. However, as a result of HUESKER´s continuing policy of new products development this material has largely been replaced by the HaTelit®C product.
HaTelit®C combines the successful bituminous coated polyester reinforcement grid with a lightweight non-woven-geotextile. This geotextile is intended as a sacrificial layer, designed to provide a larger surface area during installation and thereby both improve the bond with the surrounding bituminous layers, and increase the ease of installation.
The findings from this site support those experienced from other HaTelit® installations on similar rural roads over very poor subgrades thoughout Scotland and Ireland.
