This field of application covers commercial canal and waterway engineering, man-made lakes and coastal protection – woven and non-woven fabrics, geogrids or composites find use in all these areas. The tasks they perform include: drainage, filtration, separation, protection, containment, reinforcement and sealing, with one and the same product often capable of performing more than one function.

Function
Some examples: concrete mattresses are used for wave defences and for protecting the base of excavations. Bentonite mats line canals, ponds and are also used to protect ground water sources. High strength wovens act as effective reinforcement in the bases of groins and breakwaters. Sandbags and sand tubes are used in coastal protection works. HUESKER geosynthetics have been used in the construction of the Ems Barrier, in the land reclamation site for the Hamburg EADS Airbus GmbH factory, known locally as the "Mühlenberger Loch" and in the construction of Europe's largest snow storage pond in Austria.
